Who are the "Chatzestreckerli"? Just as the people of Bern are popularly known as "Mutzen", the people of Basel as "Bebbi" and the people of Zurich as "Hegel", the people of Lucerne are jokingly called "Chatzestrecker". Historians give the following explanation for the nickname: In earlier times, the pious people of Lucerne had to cross the "Chatzestrick" ridge just before reaching their pilgrimage destination of Einsiedeln and were then called Chatzestrecker. The fine Florentine biscuits "Luzerner Chatzestreckerli" are lovingly and painstakingly made by hand from the finest ingredients and are an ideal souvenir that can easily be taken on holiday.
